Michelle Lemon CV

Research Interests

My principal area of research is in bioacoustics and the effects of anthropogenic disturbance on cetaceans.  My PhD project focused on the role of acoustics in cetacean social organisation, geographic variation in acoustic repertoire and the effects of human-induced disturbance on the vocal and non-vocal behaviour of cetaceans.

Since secondary school, my academic goal has been to develop a greater understanding of cetaceans.  As my level of knowledge has broadened, my personal interest has become more directed towards communication and the social organisation of these mammals. My undergraduate degree and subsequent research experience (over 10,000 hours) has enabled me to enhance my knowledge of many aspects of cetacean biology. After a number of years of practical fieldwork; undertaking my PhD and in the continuation of this research, will enable me to apply these skills in the conservation and management of cetaceans.
